The Design Thinking Standards (DTS) offer adaptable learning goals that outline what students should understand and be able to do when engaging with design thinking, drawing from the practices and mindsets developed by Stanford’s d.school and its K12 Lab Network. 

Design Thinking Liberatory Process

LIBERATORY DESIGN STANDARDS

Liberatory Design is an equity-centered design process that merges human-centered design with a focus on power, identity, and systemic change to drive toward liberation and justice. The standards created for this process emphasize reflection, co-creation, and equitable participation, for transformative action and inclusion.

MINDSETS

The Design Thinking Standards (DTS) include design mindsets that represent the attitudes and dispositions students need to effectively engage in the design process, such as embracing ambiguity, learning from failure, and staying curious. These mindsets help students build resilience, empathy, and a growth-oriented approach to creative problem solving.

Design Thinking  Skills

SKILLS

The Design Thinking Standards (DTS) include specific design practices that outline the skills students will develop, such as empathizing with users, generating creative ideas, prototyping solutions, and testing them through feedback.
